STARMS: AI at the Edge for cyber-secure and intelligent railway operations

March 10, 2026
The digitisation of railways is driving the incorporation of increasingly connected, intelligent and traceable on-board systems, with a direct impact on operation and maintenance. This advance improves service efficiency and availability, but at the same time increases technical complexity and expands the exposure to cyber threats, especially in critical infrastructures with long life cycles and variable connectivity.

This is the context in which STARMS has emerged, an R&D project focused on the cybersecurity of railway embedded systems, integrated from the design stage and aligned with the sector's cybersecurity frameworks. The project, focused on remote management and intelligent maintenance, is being developed within the framework of the HAZITEK programme (ZL-2025/00371) managed by SPRI (Basque Government), and is led by Bilerro Solutions, a Velatia group company with its origins in Ikusi and specialising in the integration and implementation of operational embedded systems.

STARMS combines advanced remote management (RMS) capabilities with artificial intelligence models deployed at the edge, enabling continuous monitoring of systems and early detection of anomalous behaviour without relying on permanent connectivity. It incorporates cyber protection mechanisms that guarantee the authenticity of devices, data integrity and robustness against unauthorised access or manipulation.

From a technical and market perspective, STARMS promotes a new generation of cyber-secure operation and maintenance services by optimising availability. The project has reached a TRL 6–7 level of technological maturity, aimed at validation in real environments and subsequent industrialisation.
